Did you know that your quality of sleep has a direct correlation to your vulnerability to disease? While being tired may seem insignificant to overall health, conditions like sleep apnea pose a threat worth addressing.

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes you to temporarily stop breathing while you’re asleep. As you relax your upper airway muscles, they block your air passage for seconds at a time. Although your body eventually restores its natural breathing patterns, this can lead to a myriad of dangerous behaviors when you wake up. For instance, you’re less alert and subsequently more likely to harm yourself or others.

If you’re diagnosed or feel you may have symptoms, it’s important that you understand the risks and make sure you get the treatment you need to remain safe.

Dangers of Sleep Apnea

There are two types of sleep apnea that pose dangerous symptoms: central and obstructive. Obstructive sleep apnea is the inability to breathe despite your body’s effort to pass air through your mouth or nose. Central sleep apnea is a rarer condition where your brain doesn’t tell your muscles to breathe.

A common danger of having either one is that it negatively impacts your mood. When you get little to no sleep, you’re likely to be stressed out and rude to your loved ones and peers. In severe cases, you’re more likely to put yourself in danger, especially if you regularly operate vehicles or heavy machinery.

You’re even more likely to develop heart-related conditions, type 2 diabetes, and even a shorter lifespan. Vulnerability increases if you don’t utilize treatment from CPAP machines.

Getting Ahead of Sleep Apnea

Whether you have moderate or severe sleep apnea symptoms, the right treatment can improve your health. A continuous positive airway pressure - or CPAP machine - is considered one of the most effective resolutions for sleep apnea sufferers. As you sleep, your CPAP machine sends humidified air through your nasal passage. This leads to uninterrupted airflow to your throat so you can sleep through the night.

Getting a good night's sleep is great for your entire body. Having sleep apnea can be dangerous, even if you have very few symptoms. When you have trouble breathing while you're asleep, you're at higher risk of developing life-threatening conditions. If you suspect you have sleep apnea or your current treatment solution isn't working, you must seek professional help immediately.
