A recent coronavirus outbreak has created a sense of threat to humankind. Coronavirus is a type of common virus where a person experiences illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).
A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans. In the recent 2019 outbreak, the World Health Organization identified this new type of coronavirus. Novel coronavirus is fatal and is spreading from China to the world. It is contagious and spreads through human contact. As of February 2020, 75,779 cases of coronavirus have been reported worldwide with 2,130 deaths and 16,917 recoveries. On February 20, 2020 CNN reported that novel coronavirus appeared to be stabilizing in central China.
What Is Coronavirus?
In 1960, Coronavirus was first identified and it was named Corona by considering its crown-shaped appearance. Both humans and animals can get infected with the coronavirus. It will spread through sneezing and coughing or by touching someone who is already infected with the virus. COVID-19 is the recent coronavirus that can kill a person if not treated at the right time.
Symptoms Of Coronavirus
Coronavirus will take at least two to 14 days to get activated in your body and show symptoms. Some of the signs are:
- Cough
- Fever
- Breathing difficulty
The intensity of the symptom will vary and can escalate to severe conditions and might cause death. The virus can also lead to respiratory failure, septic shock or pneumonia.
People with a weak immune system or elderly people have a higher risk of dying from this virus. Scientists are carrying out research to understand the virus properly.
Risk Factors
If you have recently traveled from China or you are residing in China then you have a higher risk of catching this virus. So are people who are in contact with an infected person or healthcare workers who are looking after them. People with heart disease or diabetes will show serious illness if infected with this new coronavirus.
Prevention
To reduce the risk of this virus you need to take some standard precautions.
- Do not touch your mouth, nose or eyes with unclean hands.
- Avoid visiting public areas, school or workplaces when you feel sick.
- Disinfect or clean your house and places that you frequently touch by using a spray bottle.
- Do not share your glasses, dishes, bed or household items when you feel sick.
- While sneezing and coughing always cover your nose and mouth with a tissue.
- Always use hand sanitizer or clean your hands with soap.
When To Seek Medical Help
If you encounter any symptoms mentioned above then visit a doctor. People who have traveled internationally recently, especially China, should opt for a medical check-up.
What To Do If Infected With Coronavirus
Unfortunately, a vaccine for the recent coronavirus has not been developed yet. You will have to treat this virus like you would do with a cold.
- Give enough rest to your body.
- Drink fluids to stay hydrated.
- Ask your doctor for some counter medicines.
Conclusion
Wear a surgical mask, wash your hands, and avoid getting close to sick people if you want to avoid getting infected with the coronavirus. Talk to your doctor about your recent travel history to opt for immediate medical help.
