When it comes to good health, it's important to take a multi-faceted approach. After all, if you are in great shape but you are not happy, then what's the point, right? With that in mind, here are six tips for not only getting healthier, but also getting happier, in 2022.
1. Food Is Medicine
Cut processed foods out of your diet as much as possible. Processed foods are often stripped of beneficial nutrients and contain added sugar and preservatives. Eat a diet of whole foods from which your body can easily gather nutrients it needs for optimum health.
2. Sleep Is Essential
Most people tend to be lacking sleep. Sleeping enough leads to greater productivity, mental alertness, emotional balance, and general happiness. Make sure your sleeping environment is set up for success by adding light-blocking curtains, unplugging electronics, and diffusing sleep-promoting essential oils.
Get your mattress right by adding a bunk board for firmness or getting a new mattress that works better for you.
3. Exercise Is Your Friend
Exercise releases feel-good endorphins and helps your body process toxins out and feel more energetic. There's no need to go overboard with intense workout sessions that make you never want to exercise again. Ease into it, and do a little every day.
Eventually, you will find yourself enjoying and even craving the exercise you give your body, and you will likely want to do more or increase the intensity at that point. Just be sure to listen to your body and consult with your healthcare provider so you choose a form of exercise suitable for you.
4. Community Is Important
If you feel lonely or isolated, it's important to seek out groups and activities that afford you the opportunity to be around people of a similar bent.
Finding the time to volunteer regularly for an organization or cause you care about can be a great way of building a feeling of community around yourself, and you will most likely meet other people who care about that cause too.
Attending a regular fitness or yoga class, or joining a hiking, biking, or other exercise-related group, can also provide you a sense of connection to a group of people with at least one similar interest. A pet can also be a great way to feel less loneliness, so don't forget to include four-legged friends in your home if you need a little extra loving.
5. Stress Is Unhealthy
Stress can literally make you sick. The database of research on stress and its negative impact on your physical and mental health grows by the day. It's no secret that stress is by far one of the leading causes of ill-health.
If you are feeling stressed, take a good look at what is causing it and then take measures to alleviate the effect of that stress in your life. Find a counselor, coach, or other health-promoting professional to help you find healthy ways to either eliminate or deal with the stress you encounter.
Some of us simply need to reframe our perspective in order to eliminate something that is causing us stress. Others may find that starting a daily exercise program or getting a pet will help them to relax more and stress less. Everyone needs an outlet for stress, find yours and you'll be a long way to getting healthier.
6. Emotions Need Expressing
Keeping emotions bottled up inside can be a major contributing factor to stress and poor health. For better physical and mental health, make sure you are allowing yourself to feel and deal with your emotions in a healthy way. If there are toxic people in your life, learn how to identify them and step away from them as much as you can.
Value how you feel and spend time around others who also value and respect how you feel. When you are working through heavy emotions, seek out a counselor or respectful support group that can assist you in processing your feelings in a healthy way. Prioritize your health in 2022 and create more self-love and self-care by following the tips above.
