3 Single-Use Swaps That Will Make Your Lifestyle More Eco-Friendly

Not too long ago, plastic was the go-to material for many products, and the impact this had on the environment was much less understood. Nowadays, the effects of climate change are hard to ignore, and companies are producing eco-friendly products to help us do our bit to tackle the problem.

Not only are these products a great choice for the planet, but their popularity means that there’s now a wider range of products available. There’s more on the market than just cloth bags, and with a little thoughtful purchasing, we can all make swaps that will make a difference.

Here, we take a look at three things you can do to make your lifestyle more eco-friendly.

Choose reusable products

We know we said there’s more on the market than just cloth bags, but the truth is that ditching single-use plastic bags and changing them for cloth bags is a great way to start. Try and get into the habit of carrying one in your handbag so that you won’t get caught out when shopping.

For those of us wearing face masks, it’s also vital to choose a reusable option, rather than just the single-use ones. Both plastic bags and single-use masks can be damaging to ocean and river life, harm ecosystems, and be accidentally eaten by animals, which can kill or seriously harm them.

Ditch the produce bags

In order to live a balanced lifestyle, we need to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Whilst this won’t be a problem if you shop at a traditional green grocer, unfortunately, buying this produce in grocery stores means that they’ll come wrapped in single-use plastic bags, or the store will have plastic bags for shoppers to use.

This doesn’t mean you need to stop shopping at the grocery store but buy loose so that you don’t have to take the pre-wrapped options and bring your own mesh bag for fresh items.

This can actually be better for helping you actively think about what you’re choosing to buy, as instead of picking up a six-pack of apples just because that’s how they come, you may realize you only actually need four. This will help reduce your food waste as well, which is another great outcome for the planet.

Food storage swaps

Many of us will need to take a packed lunch to work, pack a lunch for a child or even just keep leftovers ready for the next day – we all need a good range of storage options. You might already own some Tupperware, but have you looked at ditching the plastic wrap you use for sandwiches or covering bowls over?

Beeswax wraps are a great option for replacing cling film. They’re made of pieces of fabric that are then coated in beeswax, and are safe for wrapping food in. Hopefully, they keep their shape, so you can fold them into parcels for loose snacks, or simply wrap them around your sandwiches.

They can also be refreshed using a block of beeswax and a quick melt in the oven, and once they’ve reached the end of their life, they can be composted.
